Aegean Deli - Preston Market - Print Club One

Preston Market - First feature print for the Print Club

I’m always drawn to a scene like this: roller shutters covering a deli on the outside of a market, after hours with no people around. The name of the store in Greek and English. Almost centred parking pole is a nod to my friend Robert Young’s work, everytime I see one I think of him, and I try to include them in the odd photo. My eye was also caught by the green lines, part of a square which breaks the frame.. the bricks in the facade in the foreground, also seen on what looks like the other side of the building - which is a bit of a distance away, seeing how those bricks are scaled down a little. All these elements really spoke to me. This site has been in the news in the past week - I need to get back and shoot more when I can. The abstract nature of environments like this really grabs me, They suggest so much and say even more, in a very quiet manner.

I spend a large amount of time shuffling through images as I’m not doing my epic walk twelve plus kilometre walks currently - there is a decade and a half where I shot every day, So the size of the archive is considerable. Many of the images I edit and save as a tif file, so they’re ready for print. As I was planning my print club candidates this image kept surfacing in the dropbox folder - It didn’t stand out in my memory, which isn’t surprising give the amount I shot for about two decades. What stood out for me when I rediscovered the image were a few factors, the blue stripe with the greek text, the large quadrilaterals which break up the space nicely, the

In my photography , I record the traces of the past. With all the talk about immigration and the overt racism & xenophobia we see & hear here, To me it’s important to remember the number of groups of immigrants who have come here and successfully melded their culture with aspects of Australian culture and given us what we recognise as Australia today. It’s interesting how so often the groups before will be the first to demonise those following. It’s like the guy in his Nike’s in his Bull’s cap complaining about America imperialism… Im diverging slightly, but I think it’s easy to forget we all came here from somewhere else, unless you’re indigenous. So many of the things we take for granted come from the many cultures who have immigrated here, starting with the English on the first fleet, (Not counting the French & Dutch who came before) Each immigrant has truly added something and I’m just thinking about food ! We’re better off for the multi culturalism we have.

I diverge.. Take a look at the print club
